Hours calculator

Hours between any two times, one shift per line: overnight shifts, 12 or 24-hour times, breaks and rounding handled. For a dated weekly card use the time card calculator; for durations, the time duration calculator.

Type times any way: 9, 930, 9:30a, 17:15. An end time earlier than the start counts as the next day.

How it works

Each line is one stretch of time: a shift, a job or a gig. The calculator takes end minus start, adds 24 hours when the end is earlier than the start (you worked past midnight), subtracts the unpaid break, and adds the lines up. Totals show as hours:minutes and decimal hours.

For a full week with days, lunch punches and overtime, use the time card calculator. For a fixed daily schedule, the work hours calculator gives weekly, monthly and yearly hours.

Adding durations rather than start and end times? Use the time duration calculator. To see what a schedule adds up to over a year, try work hours in a year.

Overnight shifts on the two nights a year when clocks change are an hour shorter (March) or longer (November) than the clock times suggest; federal rules pay the hours actually worked, so adjust that one shift by hand.

How do I calculate hours for a night shift?

If the shift ends after midnight, add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting. 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is (6 + 24) - 22 = 8 hours. The calculator does this for you when the end time is earlier than the start.
