What it is: a simple log with name, time in, time out, purpose and signature, for staff, visitors, volunteers, trainings or meetings.
Sign-in sheets and privacy
Everyone who signs can read the names above theirs. For visitors, use one sheet per day and keep filled sheets out of public view. For hourly staff a sign-in sheet can back up a time card, but the employer's payroll records still need daily and weekly hours (29 CFR 516.2).
For month-long attendance by employee, use the attendance tracker.

Questions
Is a sign-in sheet a legal time record?
It can be the source of one, but employers must still keep hours worked each day and week for non-exempt staff in their payroll records.
