What it is: a two-week grid for 12-hour shifts with a row per nurse and a key for day (7a-7p), night (7p-7a), off, vacation and charge shifts.
Building a 12-hour nursing schedule
Three 12-hour shifts a week is 36 hours; over the two weeks each full-time nurse needs 6 shifts. Count the day and night columns for each date to make sure every shift has enough nurses before posting. Hospitals may pay overtime on an 8 and 80 basis (over 8 hours a day or 80 in 14 days) by agreement with staff, which is why a two-week grid is common.
