On-call schedule template

Who is on call, who is backup, and how to reach them.

Type straight onto the sheet below or leave it blank, then print. Choose Letter or A4 at 100% scale (landscape sheets switch automatically). Nothing is uploaded; what you type is kept in this browser.

What it is: a rota listing who is primary on call and who is backup for each period, with phone numbers and an escalation contact.

When on-call time is paid

Under federal rules, on-call time counts as hours worked if the person must stay on the premises or is so restricted they cannot use the time for their own purposes (29 CFR 785.17). Being reachable by phone at home usually does not count, but time spent handling a call does. Record the calls on the daily timesheet.

Rotations that repeat every week can be generated in the shift schedule maker.

Questions

Is being on call paid?

Waiting at home and free to do your own things is usually not hours worked; waiting at the workplace or under tight restrictions usually is. Time actually spent working on a call is always hours worked.
